Jan. 12, 2007
Leading up to the 2007 baseball season, IUHOOSIERS.com will profile all of the Hoosier newcomers for the upcoming year. The newcomer profile for Friday, Jan. 12, is of infielder Reid Briglia. Briglia, who throws righty and hits lefty, will wear number 36 for Indiana in 2007.
Reid Briglia joins the Hoosiers in 2007 after attending Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., for two years. Briglia, an infielder who has played both third base and first base, is a switch hitter who throws right-handed. He will be a junior in his debut campaign for Indiana University.
Briglia played his high school ball for Cherry Hill West High School in Cherry Hill, N.J., under head coach Gary Sarno. He played third base and shortstop in high school, and in his senior campaign he hit .465 with seven home runs, amassing 99 hits over his three years as a varsity starter.
The Cherry Hill, N.J., native earned first-team laurels from the Olympic Conference and picked up All-South Jersey nods from both the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Courier Post. The Newark Star-Ledger named Briglia third-team all-state in his final campaign, and he was also the runner-up in player-of-the-year voting by the South Jersey Hot Stovers. He also played for the New Jersey state champion Babe Ruth team as a 15-year-old.
Briglia, who also played one year of basketball at Cherry Hill West, is the grandson of long-time coach of Division III Rowan University Mickey Briglia, who was inducted into the Rowan Athletic and the American Baseball Coaches Association halls of fame. His older sister, Conner, graduated from IU in 2005. The son of Joe Briglia and Paula Wengerd was born on Aug. 26, 1985, and plans to major in exercise science.
