BLOOMINGTON, Ind. --- With sub zero temperatures outside, the Indiana baseball team had its first full-squad practice of the new year on Thursday afternoon inside Mellencamp Pavilion on the IU campus. The Hoosiers went through five weeks of team workouts in the fall and will now begin a full practice schedule leading up to their first game on Feb. 21 at Morehead State.
We jumped right in and got going with a full-scale practice today, head coach Bob Morgan, who enters his 20th season at Indiana, said. We dont have that many practice opportunities before our first game.
The team spent the first segment of practice on pitching and hitting and followed up with defensive work. The pitchers got their bullpen work in today as well.
I thought things were okay for our first day out, Morgan said. I felt good about our pitching and hitting. Defensively, you could tell hadnt practiced at that speed or at that pace in awhile. We need to be more focused and mentally tough. We want to make sure we are getting better everyday and getting ourselves into playing shape.
Weather permitting, Indiana will spend several days over the next three weeks competing in intra-squad scrimmages.
The club had been going through individual workouts since the end of October and over the last two weeks after returning to campus for second semester.
This season, the Hoosiers return 17 letterwinners, four starters and six pitchers from the 2002 team that finished with a 35-20 record and fourth in the Big Ten Conference.
