Earley, Lambert Named 2010 Captains
Jan. 25, 2010
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana baseball team has named its captains for the 2010 season. Senior Michael Earley (Anderson, Ind./Anderson) and redshirt junior Brian Lambert (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac Township) have been pegged to serve as the captains for the reigning Big Ten Tournament champs. Each player is serving as a captain for the first time.
Lambert and Earley were teammates for the Grand Lake Mariners this summer in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League, and both players were invited into the league's all-star game. Lambert hit .325 with a team-leading .434 on-base percentage and 15 steals in the wood-bat league. Earley was not far behind, hitting .309 with a team-best eight doubles and 13 steals.
Earley is in his third season with the Hoosier after transferring from Cincinnati following his freshman season. The Anderson native has hit .305 in his IU career with five home runs and 32 RBI. As the team's regular designated hitter in 2008, Earley hit .318 with four home runs and added four stolen bases. He appeared in 30 games last year, hitting .276 on the season. He is expected to be the team's regular starter either at DH or in right field this season.
Lambert will serve as the team's centerfielder and leadoff hitter in 2010. After suffering an injury that caused him to miss all but four games of the 2008 season, Lambert was one of the team's best players down the stretch in 2009. He hit .345 for the season, bashing six doubles and scoring 19 runs. He appeared in 40 games and started 22, going 5-for-6 on the basepaths as well. He matched the school record with five hits against Western Illinois on April 29 of last season, and hit .412 for the Big Ten Tournament with six runs and six RBI while starting all four games in the outfield.
Indiana begins its official practice season on Monday, Feb. 1. The Hoosiers open the 2010 season with four games in San Diego from Feb. 19-21. IU will play three games at San Diego on Friday and Saturday before finishing the weekend with a game at San Diego State on Sunday.
