Hoosier Signee Monar Named Preseason All-American
Jan. 31, 2008
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana baseball signee Blake Monar has been named a preseason high school first team All-American by College Baseball News. Monar, a native of Rockport, Ind., is entering his third year as a left-handed pitcher for South Spencer High School.
"This is quite an honor for Blake," head coach Tracy Smith said. "We consider him one of the best pitchers in the region, if not the nation, and it's nice for him to be recognized for his accomplishments."
Monar had a tremendous spring for South Spencer, going 9-0 with a 0.69 ERA and six complete games in leading his team to the 2007 Class 2A state championship. In his 60 2/3 innings of work, the southpaw struck out 81 batters and allowed just 10 walks. He added a .516 average at the plate with 10 doubles, three triples and 39 RBIs.
He also helped his American Legion squad to a regional championship and earned Great Lakes Region 5 MVP honors in the process. Blake was also rated the third best prospect in the state of Indiana by the Perfect Game Scouting Service, following his performance at the Perfect Game National Tournament in Jupiter, Fla. in October.
Monar is one of five student athletes that signed with the Hoosiers during the early signing period in November. He is joined by Alex Dickerson (Poway, Calif./Poway), Josh Lyon (Indianapolis/Heritage Christian), Drew Leininger (Poway, Calif./Poway) and Cody Webber (Fountain Valley, Calif./Fountain Valley) as members of IU's 2008 recruiting class.
The Hoosiers will begin official practices on Friday, Feb. 1. They open the 2008 season in Baton Rouge, La., against Southeastern Conference power LSU on Friday, Feb. 22.
