Baseball Kicks Off 2007 With First Official Practice
Feb. 1, 2007
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana baseball team kicked off the 2007 season with its first official practice on Thursday, Feb. 1. IU will begin its season in three weeks, on Friday, Feb. 23.
The Hoosiers worked on hitting and fielding drills in the practice. Second-year head coach Tracy Smith was pleased to see his team begin its preparations for the 2007 campaign.
"After a few months off during the winter, it's good to get out here for practices again," Smith said. "With the youth of our team, we have a lot of competition for spots in the lineup, and these next few weeks will help us see what shape the team is going to take. Having the first practice underway means the season is right around the corner."
The Hoosiers return 14 letterwinners from last year's squad, which won more games in conference play than in each of the previous two seasons. The 20 newcomers represent the first class for Smith at Indiana.
Indiana will begin the 2007 season on Friday, Feb. 23, at the Wiregrass Baseball Classic in Dothan, Ala. The Hoosiers will face Troy in the opening game at 7 p.m. EST. IU squares off with Southern Mississippi and Georgia Southern later in the classic.
