Hoosiers Open Practice Sunday
Feb. 1, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana baseball team opened its official practice schedule on Sunday, Feb. 1, in Mellencamp Pavilion. The Hoosiers went live with pitching and hitting, participated in position and baserunning drills and went through hitting stations.
This is the second year that the NCAA has had a mandatory Feb. 1 start date for spring practices. It is also the second year of the uniform start date, which is set for Feb. 20 in 2009.
The Hoosiers have high expectations entering the 2009 season, as Baseball America has pegged IU to garner the Big Ten's automatic NCAA bid and earn a three seed in the Tournament. Additionally, Rivals.com called the Hoosiers a "team on the rise" and predicted IU to finish third in the conference this season.
Unanimous Preseason First Team All-American Josh Phegley has been predicted as the conference's Player of the Year by several publications and Rivals predicted lefty Matt Bashore as a First Team All-Big Ten selection.
IU begins the 2009 season at the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge in Clearwater/St. Petersburg, Fla. Indiana opens against West Virginia at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 20, at Progress Energy Park in St. Petersburg. The Hoosiers also face Georgetown and USF at the inaugural event. Tickets to the Challenge are available at BigEASTBigTenChallenge.com.
