BASEBALL STARTS 1998 CAMPAIGN IN ARIZONA Hoosiers face Kansas St., TCU, Oklahoma St.
College Sports Classic: This weekend, the Indiana baseball team starts its season in Phoenix, Arizona at the College Sports Classic. The Hoosiers will play three games starting at 12 p.m. on Friday against Kansas State. On Saturday, Indiana will face Texas Christian at 12 p.m., and Sunday, Oklahoma State at 11 a.m.
Arizona Opponents: Indiana's first opponent, Kansas State, was 32-24 last season. Saturday's opponent, Texas Christian, was 26-27 last year. Oklahoma State is ranked in three preseason polls. The Cowboys, 46-19 last season, are ranked 16th by Baseball America, 8th by The Sporting News, and 7th by Collegiate Baseball.
1998 Outlook: The Hoosiers are welcoming 14 freshman and a transfer to the roster this season. Head Coach Bob Morgan has to replace his entire infield, which included Brian Harris, an eighth round draft pick of the Philadelphia Phillies. On the mound, the Hoosiers will use a deep and inexperienced pitching staff with only one pitcher, senior Kyle Boyd, returning with more than 50 innings pitched last season. Morgan will look to the outfield to provide some runs for the Hoosiers. Roger Rodehaver's batting average of .349 last season was tops for returning players.
Head Coach Bob Morgan: Coach Morgan enters his 15th season as head coach at Indiana. Over the previous 14 seasons at IU, he has compiled a 543-295-3 (.646) record. Overall, in 22 years of coaching at Wooster, Kent State, and Indiana, Morgan's record is 835-382-5 (.683), and he has never had a season below .500. He was named Big Ten Coach of the Year in 1993 and the Mideast Regional Coach of the Year in 1996. Last year, the Hoosiers were 33-22 and had two players taken in the Major League draft, Brian Harris (8th round, Philadelphia) and Brian Partenheimer (20th, Boston). Morgan is assisted by Jeff Calcaterra, in his second season, and Scott Googins in his fourth season.
Fax-On-Demand Info.: Information on Indiana Baseball can be accessed by dialing (770) 563-1131. The Big Ten pass code and other numbers are still the same.
