IU Baseball Partners with Hoosier Country 105
Feb. 9, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana baseball team will partner with WHCC 105.1 FM during the 2009 season, the program announced today. Hoosier Country 105 will bring listeners "Hoosier Baseball Friday in Bloomington" throughout the season, with five regular-season contests set to be carried live on the station in addition to in-game updates during all the other Friday games.
"This is a meaningful partnership for IU Baseball," IU Head Coach Tracy Smith said. "Getting the Hoosiers on the radio dial has been a goal of ours since we started here and the staff at Hoosier Country have always shown their support for the baseball program. I want to thank Sandy Zehr, Rick Evans, Sheila Stevens and everyone over at the station for their hard work in making this happen."
Five contests are slated to be carried live on 105.1 FM. A non-conference affair against Georgia Southern on March 6 will kick off the game coverage of the Hoosiers. Conference contests against Illinois (April 3), Iowa (April 10), Michigan (April 24) and Purdue (Sunday, May 3) will also be broadcast live over the airways. Jeremy Gray, the voice of Indiana women's basketball, and Matt Brady will bring listeners all the game action.
"Hoosier Country 105 is delighted to work with Indiana University Athletics to continue to build upon our partnership," Artistic Media Vice President and Hoosier Country General Manager Sandy Zehr said. "Indiana University Baseball is a program on the move! We continue to be impressed with Coach Smith and his commitment to building a quality program with exceptional student-athletes. We're looking forward to a great year with Hoosier Baseball Fridays!"
But listeners will hear more than just game coverage this season. For every Friday game, WHCC will provide live reports from the ballpark every three innings. Additionally, Smith will join Rick Evans every Friday morning in a weekly segment - "From the Cheap Seats."
In addition to the coverage on Hoosier Country 105, all IU baseball games will be broadcast live on IUHoosiers.com through Stretch Internet, with Gray and Brady providing the commentary for every IU Baseball contest throughout the year.
Led by unanimous Preseason All-American Josh Phegley, the Hoosiers return seven offensive starters and their top two pitchers from a team that finished third at the Big Ten Tournament in 2008. IU was recently predicted to garner the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by Baseball America.
The Hoosiers will begin their 2009 campaign against West Virginia in the Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge on Feb. 20 in St. Petersburg, Fla. IU will also play Georgetown and South Florida in the three-day event. Tickets to the Challenge are on sale now at bigeastbigtenchallenge.com.
