Indiana opened its 2000 baseball season with a 10-1 win over IUPUI at Sembower Field. The game was scheduled last evening as the Hoosiers looked to get some game action in prior to their trip to San Diego next weekend.

Shortstop Eric Blakeley led the offensive attack with a pair of home runs and five RBI. Blakeley, a sophomore, saw action in just 23 games last season and collected 11 hits, without a home run, and drove in six runs. He homered in the fourth inning with a man on and then connected on a three-run shot in a four-run Indiana eighth.

The Hoosiers and Jaguars were deadlocked at one before Rob Stastny drilled a one out home run down the left field line to give Indiana a 2-1 lead. After a Jason Williams single Blakeley sent a line drive over the left field wall to give the Hoosiers a 4-1 advantage.

Indiana used five different pitchers. Junior Zach McClellan earned the victory as he worked three innings without allowing a hit and fanned three to improve to 11-1 on his career. David Ferris worked a pair of perfect innings and struck out three.

The Hoosiers took a 1-0 lead in the first as Joe Sadler grounded out to plate Blake St. Clair who reached base on a hit batsmen. IUPUI tied the game at one in the fourth inning with an unearned run, but Indiana responded with its four-run fourth.

The Hoosiers got some more insurance with a pair of runs in the seventh. Benji Clause led off the inning with a triple and scored on a Dan Haegele double. Haegele later scored on a Rich Berich sacrifice fly.

Hoosier quarterback Antwaan Randle El, a 2000 Heisman hopeful, saw his first action in a baseball uniform as he came in as a defensive replacement in the seventh inning and drew a walk, stole a base and scored on Blakeley's second home run in the eighth.

The Hoosiers will be in action next weekend as they travel to San Diego to face San Diego State on Friday, Oklahoma State on Saturday and Kansas State on Sunday.
