Newcomer Profile - Chris Squires

Leading up to the 2007 baseball season, IUHOOSIERS.com will profile all of the Hoosier newcomers for the upcoming year. The newcomer profile for Saturday, Feb. 17, is of pitcher Chris Squires. Squires, who throws and hits righty, will wear number 34 for Indiana in 2007.
Chris Squires joins the Hoosiers after playing three years for Pat McMahon at Canterbury High School. The Fort Wayne, Ind., native also played basketball in high school.
Squires finished his career in fine fashion, posting a 5-1 record with a 1.77 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 35 innings at Canterbury. At the plate, he posted a .460 average, hitting four home runs and seven doubles on the year. Squires was named one of the top players in Indiana by Collegiate Baseball and was given honorable mention by Baseball America in the publication's list of the top 25 players in Indiana.
In his sophomore campaign, Squires hit .547 for the year, winning the Northeast Indiana batting title. He was also the recipient of Canterbury's Scholar-Athlete Award in both 2005 and 2006.
Squires has one brother, Cameron, and plans to major in entrepreneurship at IU. The son of Steven and Rose Squires was born on March 29, 1988.
