BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Junior catcher Josh Phegley has been named one of 50 players on the Golden Spikes Award Watch List, USA Baseball announced today. The Golden Spikes Award is presented annually to college baseball's top player. Phegley and Michigan's Chris Fetter are the only two players from the Big Ten to be named to the list.

Phegley has been named a First Team Preseason All-American by several publications, including the National College Baseball Writers of America, Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, Baseball America, Rivals.com and Ping!Baseball. Phegley is also a member of the College Baseball Foundation's Wallace Watch List, where he is joined by teammate Matt Bashore.

The Terre Haute native, who collected All-America honors from the NCBWA, the American Baseball Coaches Association and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper last season, finished off one of the best offensive years in IU history in 2008. The Terre Haute native posted a .438 average - the second-best clip in the nation - to go along with 15 home runs, 80 RBI and 20 doubles. He also finished second in the Big Ten with 69 runs, trailing only teammate and Cincinnati Reds draftee Andrew Means in that category.

The Hoosiers will begin their 2009 campaign against West Virginia in the Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge on Feb. 20 at 4 p.m.. IU will also play Georgetown and South Florida in the three-day event in the greater Tampa, Fla., area. Live audio and GameTracker will be available for all games at IUHoosiers.com.
