Phegley, Dickerson Collect Challenge Honors
Feb. 23, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The 2009 Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge produced more than just a successful first road trip for the Hoosiers. Catcher Josh Phegley was awarded All-Tournament honors while designated hitter Alex Dickerson was given All-Tournament honorable mention for the inaugural event.
Phegley, a preseason All-American, displayed his ability with the bat and glove early in the season. After a stellar 2008 season, the Indiana catcher picked up right where he left off, scorching West Virginia pitchers for an RBI and four hits in the season opener. Phegley finished the tournament with six hits in 11 at bats (.545) and three RBI. He also caught three of four runners stealing from behind the plate.
Dickerson earned an honorable mention at the plate as well in his first weekend as a college athlete. After picking up three hits and four RBI with a home run against USF on Sunday, Dickerson finished the weekend with five hits and team highs in RBI (5) and total bases (9). The freshman batted .357 in his debut weekend.
The Hoosiers will take on IPFW on Wednesday at Sembower Field if field conditions permit. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but game officials postponed the contest.
