Hoosiers Edged by Murray State
MILLINGTON, Tenn. - A ninth-inning home run lifted Murray State to a 2-1 victory over the Indiana baseball team on Friday at the Service Academies Classic in Millington, Tenn., at USA Stadium. The Hoosiers fell to 1-4 while Murray State improved to 1-3.
With two outs in the top of the ninth, Thoroughbred first baseman Geoff Kirksey belted the game-winning home run, a solo shot, just over the right field wall to make it, 2-1. It was the only hit relief pitcher Adam Pegg surrendered.
Indiana suffered its fourth loss of the season, despite allowing just four hits in the game. IU starter Josh Lewis turned in an impressive outing for the Hoosiers, pitching seven innings and allowing just three hits. The sophomore righthander issued one walks and struck out four batters. The only run he gave up was unearned. Pegg, who pitched the final two innings and had a pair of strikeouts, took the loss.
Joe Ross Shelton gave up just one hit, and recorded four strikeouts in two innings of work on his way to the victory for Murray State. Starter Craig Kraus scattered five Hoosier hits, gave up one walk and struck out eight.
Murray State pushed across the game's first run in the top of third. To lead off the frame, third baseman James Akin hit a liner back at IU starter Josh Lewis, and Lewis lost track of the ball. He slipped on the mound as he went to throw to first, and Akin moved to second on the erroneous throw. Akin came home for the lead on rightfielder Scotty Scott's sacrifice fly to center field.
Indiana knotted the score at one in the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior third baseman Corby Heckman single to left field with two outs, and came around to score on junior centerfielder Joe Kemp's double to deep right-center.
The Hoosiers attempted to mount a comeback in the bottom of the ninth. With one away, senior leftfielder Kevin Mahar knocked a base hit to center field. Senior David Hughes was inserted to pinch hit. Hughes hit the ball back to the pitcher, and reached base on a fielder's choice when Murray State pitcher Joe Ross Shelton's throw, in an attempt to throw out Mahar, went over the second baseman's head. Shelton recovered, though, and struck out the next two batters to end the game and notch the win.
Heckman was 2-for-4 at the plate and scored a run.
The Hoosiers will be back in action in the Service Academics Classic on Saturday when they face border rival Kentucky at 11 a.m. (EST).
