MILLINGTON, Tenn. - For the second time in as many games, the Indiana baseball team played an extra-inning contest. The Hoosiers downed Memphis in 10 innings on Saturday, but came up short against Navy, 6-5, in a 12-inning battle in the final game of the Service Academy Classic on Sunday.

IU (3-1) concluded the Classic with a 2-1 mark, while the Midshipmen (3-3-1) ended the weekend with the same 2-1 record. The two teams also went into extra innings at last season's Classic, with Indiana pulling out a 5-4 win in 11 innings.

As was the case throughout the weekend, the Hoosiers rallied in the late innings. Navy held a 5-3 advantage in the eighth inning before IU stormed back. Junior Zach Boswell started the comeback with a home run to center field, his second of the season, to make it 5-4.

After reaching on a bunt single, sophomore Josh Richardson stole second, and junior Reggie Watson delivered a two-out single to right to even the score at 5-5.

The score remained deadlocked until the bottom of the 12th inning. The Hoosiers stranded Boswell on third in the top half of the frame, and Navy capitalized when Jared Munde was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give the Midshipmen the 6-5 win.

James Lee (1-0) earned the victory, while sophomore Matt Saba (1-1) suffered the defeat.

In addition to going deep, Boswell added a double and finished the afternoon 2-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored. Richardson went 3-for-6 with an RBI, two runs and one stolen base, and Watson added two hits with an RBI and run scored. Senior Joe Kemp (1-for-5) extended his hitting streak to 11 games (dating back to last season) with a single in the seventh.

Indiana took the first lead of the ballgame in the third inning following a pair of Midshipmen mistakes. Richardson and Watson laced singles, and junior Jay Brant reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases for Kemp, who was hit by a pitch to plate Richardson. Navy starter Daniel Kovalcik then threw a wild pitch, allowing Watson to score and give IU a 2-0 lead.

The Hoosiers tacked on a solo run in the fourth when Richardson drove home Boswell to make it 3-0.

Hoosier starter Adam Poole blazed through 4 2/3 innings before running into trouble. The Midshipmen loaded the bases for Jonathan-Matthew Johnston, who promptly hit a bases-clearing double down the right-field line to even the game at 3-3.

Poole ended up tossing five innings, giving up three runs on four hits. The Orleans, Ind., product walked a pair and struck out four.

Additionally, junior Dan Pezley (2/3 innings), senior Steve Nielsen (2 1/3) and sophomore Clint Crosier (2 innings) combined for five scoreless innings of relief after Navy tallied two runs in the seventh, keeping the Hoosiers in the game. The trio allowed two hits and only one walk to go along with four strikeouts during the stretch.

Kemp and Boswell were selected to the all-tournament team.

IU returns home for its next contest, hosting the Butler Bulldogs on Wednesday, March 2. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Sembower Field.
