BASEBALL HOOSIERS POUND BUTLER IN FIRST ROUND OF DIAMOND CLASSIC
Evansville, Ind.-- The Indiana baseball team hammered out 13 hits and junior Chad Smith (1-1) scattered six hits over nine innings as the Hoosiers defeated Butler, 10-3. All but one Hoosier starter had at least one hit as IU scored in double figures for the second consecutive game.
Junior Brandt Childs extended his hitting streak to seven games, going four for five with one RBI. He has had a hit in every game he has played this season, and leads the Hoosiers with a .522 average. Senior Roger Rodeheaver also got a hit in his seventh straight game, going two for three with three runs scored and a pair of RBI.
Smith started off shaky, walking three of the first five batters to face him and falling behind, 1-0 after just two batters. He then settled down to pitch the Hoosiers' first complete game of the season, striking out seven while walking five.
The Hoosiers scored four runs in the third inning, highlighted by senior Mike Spisak's two-run home run, his first of the year. Junior Jason Williams hit his first career home run in the fourth inning, also a two-run shot.
Sophomore Doug Devore added a pair of hits and three RBI, and now leads the team with nine runs batted in.
The win improves the Hoosiers to 4-4 and drops the Bulldogs to 4-4. IU will face Ball State tomorrow, who advanced to the second round with a 15-12 victory over Indiana State. The first pitch at Bosse Field is scheduled for 5 p.m. EST.
