Indiana Falls to Kentucky
MILLINGTON, Tenn. -- The Indiana baseball team fell to Kentucky, 10-2, on Saturday at the Service Academy Classic in Millington, Tenn. The Hoosiers' hitting woes continued as they fell to 1-5 on the season. Kentucky improved its record to 6-2 with the win.
Indiana mustered just five hits in the loss, and despite five solid innings from starting pitcher Nick Vitielliss, Kentucky collected 10 hits. Vitielliss gave up just three hits, no walks and struck out three. The only run he allowed was unearned.
The Hoosiers picked up the game's first runs in the top of the third inning. Designated hitter Troy Ragle banged a leadoff single up the middle. Catcher Cody Wargo sacrifice bunted Ragle to second, and then second baseman Jay Brant drew a walk. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch, and shortstop Seth Bynum cleared the bases with a single through the right side, giving IU a 2-0 lead.
The Wildcats scored a run in the fifth. Centerfielder Brandon Shelby laced a leadoff double down the left field line, and came around to score as Michael Bertram reached on an error by Wargo.
Kentucky took the lead in the sixth. Indiana relief pitcher Chris Behrens walked UK second baseman Spencer Graeter. With one away, Mike Breyman hit a double down the line in left field to plate Graeter. Breyman moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a fielder's choice to make it 3-2.
UK built its lead to four runs in the seventh. After a strikeout by relief pitcher Adam Pegg, Kentucky shortstop J.B. Schmidt reached first on a bunt single. Schmidt advanced to second on a wild pitch and then to third on a single by leadoff man Casey Gilvin. Schmidt scored on another wild pitch, and Gilvin came home on an error by Indiana shortstop Seth Bynum.
Graeter, who reached on a walk, scored Kentucky's third and final run of the inning, courtesy of a sacrifice fly by third baseman Jesse Barber.
The Wildcats pushed across four more runs in the eighth on three hits, three walks and a hit batter.
Behrens (0-1) was tagged with the loss for Indiana. He pitched 1.1 innings, scattered four hits and surrendered four earned runs in the loss, while walking one and striking out two.
