HOOSIERS TO PLAY FOR DIAMOND CLASSIC TITLE

    Hoosiers defeat Ball State, 3-2

Evansville, Ind.- Senior Kyle Boyd pitched a complete game four-hitter as the Hoosiers advanced to the final game of the 7-Up Diamond Classic.

Junior Brandt Childs, who leads the Hoosiers with a .522 average, slugged a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to give the Hoosiers a 3-2 lead, and Boyd held the Cardinals hitless for the final three innings. The home run extended Childs hitting streak to eight games - every game he has played in this season.

Boyd (2-0) gave up two runs in the top of the first, but allowed just two more hits over the next eight innings, striking out 10 while walking just two. The ten strikeouts, which included striking out the side in the eighth inning, are one shy of his career high set last season at Cincinnati.

IU managed just five hits, three of which came in the sixth inning. With one out, sophomore Benji Clause walked and senior Mike Spisak singled him to third. After Roger Rodeheaver struck out, Childs homered, knocking in all of the Hoosiers runs.

The win improves the Hoosiers to 5-4 and drops Ball State to 1-1. IU will play the winner of the Purdue/Ball State game tomorrow at 8 p.m EST.
