IU TOPS DEPAUW 10-3
February 29, 2000 IU TOPS DEPAUW 10-3
Big innings have been the key to the Hoosiers' victories this season. Today Indiana took advantage of a four-run fifth to beat the Depauw Tigers 10-3 at Sembower Field.
Dan Haegele started the Hoosiers off with a single in the bottom of the first. Joe Sadler singled to push Haegele to third. As Sadler stole second, Haegele scored to put IU up 1-0.
Depauw answered quickly, scoring three in the second. The Hoosiers scored again in the second. Jason Williams led off with a triple. Antwaan Randle El got his first collegiate hit and RBI as he singled Williams into home. In the third John Bestler scored after a walk to tie the game at three all.
But it was the fifth inning that proved to be the deciding factor. IU scored four runs. Blake St. Clair and Williams each singled. An error scored St. Clair. Kevin O'Brien had a sacrifice fly to score Williams. Randle El reached on an error and scored for the Hoosiers. Bestler reached on a fielder's choice, and scored off an error. For the inning, IU had four runs from two hits and two errors.
IU scored three more in the seventh to put the game away. Haegele tallied his second hit of the game with a double RBI, scoring Vince Volpe. Rich Berich, the DH, scored Haegele on a single to center field. Benji Clause scored off a throwing error.
"Some of our younger kids threw for us today, and they did alright," said head coach Bob Morgan. "We're better offensively and defensively, but we really need to pitch better."
The Hoosiers have a match against Butler tomorrow at 3 pm at Sembower Field.
