Hoosiers Set For Three-Game Home Series With Cleveland State
The Indiana baseball team look to extend its three-game win streak this weekend as the Cleveland State Vikings visit Sembower Field. The series kicks off on Friday at 3 p.m. with game one. Game is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday's finale will start at Noon.
For all of the Hoosier baseball team's home games, live updated will available on Indiana's official athletic web site, IUHOOSIERS.COM.
About the Hoosiers
After a 1-5 start, the Hoosiers have won three straight games to bring their record to 4-5. Indiana most recently defeated Butler, 4-0, on Wednesday in Indianapolis.
The Hoosiers sport a .232 batting average as team. Junior Corby Heckman leads the way with 14 hits, seven runs scored and a .424 average. Senior Kevin Mahar is second with a .406 average and ranks first on the club with five extra base hits. Senior Seth Bynum has driven in a team-best 10 runs and hits at a .333 clip.
The IU pitching staff owns a 3.78 ERA and 62 strikeouts. Senior Adam Pegg and sophmore Troy Ragle combined for the shutout on Wednesday against Butler. Pegg pitched seven innings and evened his record at 1-1. Ragle worked the final two innings and notched his first save of the season.
Scouting Cleveland State
The Vikings will open their 2004 season this weekend at Indiana. Cleveland State finished with a 13-39 record last season and in seventh place in the Horizon League.
This season, the Vikings return five position starters and seven members of their pitching staff.
Head coach Jay Murphy is beginning his 13th year as a head coach and his eighth season at Cleveland State.
The all-time Series With Cleveland State
Indiana owns a 112-33 record all-time against teams from the Horizon League, but has never faced Cleveland State.
Heckman Has the Hot Bat
Just as he did a season ago, junior infielder Corby Heckman is showing his strength at the plate. Heckman is hitting .424 to lead the Hoosiers, and has scored a team-high seven runs. The Spencer, Ind., product has also driven in four runs and is getting on base 50 percent of the time.
Pegg, Ragle Combine For Shutout
Senior Adam Pegg got the start on Wednesday, and responded by beating Butler for the second straight season. The righthander pitched seven innings and scattered six hits while recording five strikeouts. Sophomore Troy Ragle relieved Pegg in the eighth and notched his first save of the season. The lefty allowed just one Butler hit, walked one and struck out a pair.
Mahar Goes Deep
Senior outfielder Kevin Mahar belted home runs in back-to-back games earlier this week. Mahar hit the first home run of the season for IU in Tuesday's 9-4 victory over Marian. At Butler on Wednesday, he broke a scoreless tie with a solo shot in the seventh inning. Mahar hit three home runs all of last season.
Vitielliss Off To a Good STart
Senior hurler Nick Vitielliss has performed well in his return to the hill. After earning All-Big Ten honors in 2002, Vitielliss was forced to miss all of last season while recuperating from arm surgery. The 6-5 righthander has performed well thus far. Vitielliss (0-1) had made two starts and pitched a total of seven innings. He sports a 2.57 ERA and has allowed only two earned runs. Against Kentucky on Feb. 28, Vitielliss pitched five innings, and gave up just three hits and no walks while striking out three. The only run he allowed was unearned.
Probable Pitching Rotations
Indiana's probable starters on the mound for this weekend's series are:
Friday: So. Josh Lewis (RHP), 0-1, 1.64 ERA
Saturday: Sr. Nick Vitielliss (RHP), 0-1, 2.57 ERA
Sunday: Jr. Steve Nielsen (RHP), 1-0, 8.10 ERA
Wearing Out the Base Paths
Indiana has stolen 16 bases in 21 attempts through nine games this season. Sophomores Jay Brant and Reggie Watson are leading the way in that category. Brant is 4-for-4, while Watson is 3-for-3. IU has allowed its opponents only nine steals in 12 attempts.
Seniors to Serve as Hoosier Captains
The Hoosiers' eight seniors, Chris Behrens, Seth Bynum, Ryan Donley, David Hughes, Kevin Mahar, Adam Pegg, Nick Vitielliss and Cody Wargo, will serve as team captains for the 2004 season.
The Hoosiers will travel to Cincinnati to face the Xavier Musketeers on Tuesday, March 9, at 3 p.m. Then, IU heads to Bradenton, Fla., for its annual spring trip, March 13-20. IU is back at home on March 23 to face Indiana Wesleyan at 3 p.m.
