Schwarber Earns Big Ten Freshman of the Week Honors
March 5, 2012
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - For the second straight week, a Hoosier has been named the Big Ten's Freshman of the Week. This time it was catcher Kyle Schwarber earning the weekly conference accolade after hitting .545 with two homeruns, a triple and driving in six runs during a three-game road series at East Tennessee State. Outfield Chris Sujka received the Big Ten recognition last week.
Schwarber was a wrecking ball in the batters' box all weekend, slugged at a 1.273 clip with an on-base percentage of .615; good for an OPS of 1.888. His biggest day came in IU's game two victory. With the Hoosiers' trailing 4-1 entering the fifth inning, Schwarber capped off a six-run inning with his first career grand slam to put the Cream and Crimson ahead for good. He also tripled and scored a second run in that contest. Schwarber consistently put the ball in play, striking out just once in 11 at-bat.
Schwarber and the rest of the Hoosiers play 10 games over the next 12 days, starting with mid-week games at Louisville (Tuesday) and Indiana State (Wednesday) before heading west for the annual spring break trip.
