    BASEBALL HOOSIERS DEFEAT IUPUI, 4-2

Bloomington, Ind.- The Indiana baseball team got five scoreless innings from freshman David Ferris in his first career start as the Hoosiers defeated IUPUI, 4-2.

The Hoosiers scored twice in the second inning with two outs as freshman designated hitter Dan Haegele walked and stole two bases. Haegele scored when IUPUI catcher Tim Gross threw the ball into left field, giving IU a 1-0 lead. Junior third baseman Frank O'Connell then doubled and scored on a two-out single by center fielder Jason Williams.

IUPUI threatened in the sixth inning off reliever Tom Willerer, scoring one run and nearly scoring another. With one out, Josh Brumbaugh had an apparent RBI fielder's choice, but was called out at first when Jeff Slunaker made an illegal slide into second base. The double play erased the run and ended the inning, preserving the Hoosiers 3-1 lead.

IU would add another run in the bottom half of the sixth on Roger Rodeheaver's first home run of the season, and then scored its final run in the eighth for the 4-2 final.

Haegele had his best game of the season, going three for three with two runs scored and a career-high four stolen bases. The three hits are also a career best for Haegele.

Indiana improves to 6-5 with the victory, while the Metros fall to 1-8. IU returns to action this weekend with a double header Saturday against Cincinnati at 1 p.m. The Hoosiers and Bearcats willll also play on Sunday at 1 p.m.
