Indiana Blasts Vikings, 18-4
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana baseball team captured its fifth straight victory in convincing fashion on Saturday at Sembower Field, defeating Cleveland State, 18-4. After winning on Friday, today's victory clinched the three-game series and improved IU's record to 6-5. The Vikings slipped to 0-2 heading into Sunday's finale.
The Hoosiers posted a season-high 16 hits in the win. Centerfielder Reggie Watson (3-for-4), second baseman Corby Heckman (3-for-5), shortstop Seth Bynum (3-for-5) and leftfielder Kevin Mahar (3-for-5) all collected three hits.
Mahar continued his offensive tear with two home runs and four RBI. It marked the fourth straight games he has hit a long ball. Heckman had four RBI as well.
Starting pitcher Nick Vitielliss turned in another solid performance for Indiana. The senior righthander scattered seven hits and allowed two earned runs in six innings of work. Vitielliss fanned five batters and did not issue a single walk. He is now 1-1 on the season.
Indiana scored four runs in the second inning, one in the third and two fourth before exploding for 11 runs in the top of the eighth. The Hoosiers used eight hits and four runs in the big inning.
David Boyza took the loss for Cleveland State. Boyza pitched three innings and gave up five hits and five runs, three of them earned. He walked five and struck out three.
The Vikings registered 11 hits in the loss and committed four errors. Third baseman Dominic Erney homered in the eighth inning. Erney was 3-for-4 and scored two runs. Steve Chinn and Ryan Dukovich also had two hits for CSU.
Dan Pezley (1.0 inn., 3 hits, 1 run) and Brian Lortz (2.0 inn., 1 hit, 1 run, 3 Ks) pitched in relief for IU.
Indiana and Cleveland State will close out the series on Sunday at Noon at Sembower Field.
