B1G Selects Schwarber as Player of the Week
March 11, 2013
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Sophomore catcher Kyle Schwarber was named the Big Ten's Player of the Week Monday (March 11), the same day he was also tabbed as one of 48 catchers on the Johnny Bench Award Watch List. It marks his first Player of the Week recognition and fourth weekly conference accolade overall after earning Freshman of the Week laurels three times last season.
Schwarber tore through the Florida pitching staff all weekend long, batting .714 (10-14) with a homerun, double and four runs batted in. He slugged at a 1.000 clip and posted multiple hits and drove in at least one in each game as Indiana won the road series at the 28th-ranked and SEC foe Gators. Schwarber posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage as well, splitting time between left field and behind the dish. After the weekend, Schwarber's season batting average is up to a Big Ten-leading .471.
He is the second Hoosier to bring home the award in 2013, following Sam Travis' B1G Player of the Week selection after the opening weekend.
