Homestead, Fla.-- The Marist Red Foxes scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth for a 8-5 win over Indiana. With the loss, IU drops to 1-3 on its spring trip and 12-6 overall, while Marist improves to 7-2.
The Hoosiers scored all of their runs in the third inning to take a 5-3 lead. With the bases loaded Dan Haegele singled to drive in two runs to start the rally. Blake St. Clair and Rich Berich each had RBI singles in the inning as well.
Marist battled back in the eighth off IU closer Chris Wilson who took the loss. Wilson started the inning off by allowing two straight singles before getting a pop-out. He then walked the next two batters to load the bases and forced in a run. Following a sacrifice bunt to squeeze in another run, Wilson walked a batter and allowed a two-RBI single by Anthony Cervini. In all, the Red Foxes scored four runs on three hits in the doomed eighth.
Wilson is now 0-1, while Marist starter, Chuck Bechtel improved to 2-0. Brian Didkan, who got out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the ninth, registered his first save of the year. Indiana starter sophomore Matt Rice went seven innings and allowed seven hits, four runs (all earned), three walks, with five strikeouts. It would have been his first collegiate win had Marist not rallied in the eighth.
Haegele in the game went 3-5 with two RBI and Rich Berich went 2-4 with an RBI.
The Hoosiers have the day off on Wednesday and will next play again on Thursday, March 16 vs. St. Francis at 3 p.m.
