Phegley Collects Pair of Weekly Honors
March 18, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Junior catcher Josh Phegley has earned a pair of weekly honors for the week of March 9-15. Phegley collected his second career Big Ten Player of the Week mention on Monday and on Tuesday was named to the College Baseball Foundation's National All-Star Lineup for Week Four.
Phegley became the fourth player in school history to slug three home runs in a game when he connected three times against Morehead State on Tuesday. He also tied the school record with five hits (the fourth time he has done so in his career) and drove in six.
For the week, Phegley led all Hoosiers with 11 RBI and slugged 1.467 with a .714 on-base percentage (2.181 OPS). The Terre Haute native hit .667 (10-for-15) with four home runs in the Hoosiers' four games. The preseason All-American also had a three-hit game at No. 29 Kentucky and drove in three against Jacksonville State. He led Indiana with eight runs on the week.
After a slow start to 2009, Phegley has caught fire as of late. Since hitting his first home run of the year against Le Moyne on March 8, Phegley has gone 15-for-26 (.577) with 19 RBI and all six of his home runs. The catcher currently leads the Big Ten in slugging percentage (.807) and on-base percentage (.532) and is tied for the league lead in home runs. He is also among the league's top 10 in batting average (seventh, .421), RBI (third, 25), runs (fifth, 18) and walks (second, 15).
The Hoosiers are back in action on Wednesday evening when they head to Deland, Fla., for a matchup with Stetson. Game time is slated for 6:30 p.m. at Melching Field. Live audio and statistics will be available on IUHoosiers.com.
