HOOSIERS TOP PENN STATE
March 24, 2000 HOOSIERS TOP PENN STATE
State College, Penn.--Brad Edwards pitched a complete game to lead Indiana to a 3-1 win over Penn State. Edwards struck out five and allowed only five hits in the Hoosiers' conference opener.
Eric Blakeley and Kevin O'Brien each tallied one hit and one RBI to lead IU. Benji Clause had the third RBI for the Hoosiers. Vasilli Spanos and Gibran Hamdan also collected hits against the Nittany Lions.
Penn State got on the board first when Shawn Fagan scored off a Scott Hamilton groundout in the fourth. Indiana quickly answered in the fifth when Blakeley, Hamdan and O'Brien put together a string of hits. O'Brien's single scored Blakeley, and Clause's sacrifice fly scored Hamdan. IU collected two runs, to go up 2-1.
Indiana finished the scoring in the sixth when Spanos reache on a single to left, and then scored when Blakeley reached on an error.
IU's defense proved to be the key, as Edwards and the Hoosiers were able to hold the Lions to only three more hits, and no runs.
Tomorrow the Hoosiers and Nittany Lions face off in a double header beginning at 1 p.m.
