    HOOSIERS POUND DEFIANCE, 11-2

Bloomington, Ind.- The Indiana baseball team hammered Defiance College 11-2 to improve to 13-10 on the season. IU collected nine hits while scoring four runs in the seventh and five in the eighth.

Freshman Mark Elder earned his first career victory, pitching four shutout innings in relief of starter Fred Graf. Graf allowed one run in two innings, while junior Chris Wilson also pitched two scoreless innings.

Sophomore shortstop Benji Clause had a solid performance, going two for four with two runs scored and a pair of RBI. He also stole a base, and scored from second on a wild pitch in the seventh inning.

IU's four run sixth was highlighted by junior Brandt Childs' two-run homer, his team-leading fifth of the season. The five-run seventh was capped off by freshman Dan Haegele's two-run double. Haegele finished two for three with two RBI.

Senior Roger Rodeheaver and junior Jason Williams, each of whom had started all 22 games, both missed their first games of the season. Rodeheaver sat out due to an ankle injury suffered against Oklahoma State at the Homestead Challenge, while Williams was suffering from dizziness and was a last-minute scratch. Rodeheaver is expected to be back for the Big Ten opener against Penn State Friday, while Williams may be available for action by tomorrow.

The Hoosiers (13-10) are scheduled to face Franklin College tomorrow in a rescheduled make-up of their March 11 game. First pitch at Sembower Field is set for 3 p.m.
