    INDIANA BLANKS DEFIANCE

    Five pitchers combine for shutout

In their last tune-up before the Big Ten season, the Indiana Hoosiers won easily over Franklin College, 16-0. Pitchers Zack McClellan, Greg Schabel, David Ferris, Zack Otte, and Nick Otte combined on the seven-hit shutout. Offensively, the Hoosiers scored 16 runs on 20 hits and took advantage of three Grizzlie errors.

The Hoosiers scored runs in the second through sixth innings including nine in the fifth and sixth. Freshman shortstop Ryan Schade, who came into the game batting .077, lead the way going 3-4 with five RBI and two runs scored. The five RBI is the most by a Hoosier in a single game this season. The 20 team hits also sets a high for the season.

Indiana's top two hitters continued to blister the ball. Catcher Brandt Childs went 3-3 with two RBI. He raised his average to .392 on the season and 25 RBI, both lead the team. Freshman Dan Haegele also stayed hot at the plate going 2-3. He is now batting .373.

McClellan (2-0), a freshman, picked up his second win of the season tossing two innings. He gave up three hits and struck out three. The Otte's finished the game with the left-hander Zack pitching the seventh and eighth and right-hander Nick finishing the game in the ninth. In between, Greg Schabel and David Ferris pitched two hitless innings apiece.

Indiana is now 14-10 overall and open up play this weekend against Penn State in a weekend series. The two teams open up on Friday at 3 p.m. Then a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m., and the series concludes on Sunday with a 1 p.m. game. All of the action takes place at Sembower Field.
