March 26, 2012
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Hoosier infielder Sam Travis was named the Big Ten Player of the Week on Monday (March 26) after leading Indiana to a 4-1 week that included a road series victory over Penn State to start the 2012 conference slate.
In addition, Travis shares Co-Freshman of the Week laurels with his high school teammate, Brandon Magallones of Northwestern, who was also the Pitcher of the Week honoree.
Just six weeks into the season, Indiana has already swept the weekly conference awards. Both Chris Sujka and Kyle Schwarber had previously been tabbed as Freshmen of the Week while Joey DeNato was selected for Pitcher of the Week recognition after IU's spring break trip.
Travis extended his current hitting streak to 11 games after batting .727 and slugging at a .909 clip during the PSU series. For the week, Travis hit .579 with a homerun, two doubles, six RBI and a .842 slugging percentage. Travis drew three walks and was hit by a pitch to raise his weekly on-base percentage to .625 as well. The Orland Park, Ill., native drove in at least one run in four of the five games.
Travis and the rest of the Hoosiers host Xavier on Tuesday, March 27, for a 3 p.m. contest at Sembower Field. A live video stream and GameTracker live statistics will be available for the game.
