Hoosiers Nearly Sweep Weekly Conference Awards

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Hoosiers earned two of three Big Ten weekly awards on Monday (March 28). Micah Johnson was named the conference's Player of the Week and Dustin DeMuth grabbed Freshman of the Week honors. Purdue's Brad Scheiber was tabbed as the Pitcher of the Week.
It marks back-to-back weeks for Indiana nabbing the Player of the Week accolades after Alex Dickerson did so last week (March 21). DeMuth is also the second IU frosh to win that award as Ty Downing was selected exactly one month ago on Feb. 28.
Johnson picks up Player of the Week honors after hitting .692 and slugging 1.000 to lead Indiana to a 2-1 record last week. The second baseman recorded three hits and scored at least two runs in each of the Hoosiers' three games last week, also going 6-for-6 on the base paths. The sophomore racked up an OPS of 1.733 on the strength of four doubles, scored eight total runs and drove in another. Johnson was also perfect in the field, making a leaping grab in the bottom of the ninth in Indiana's win over Evansville to preserve the victory. Following last week's performance, the Indianapolis native ranks among the Big Ten's top 10 in batting average (.391), slugging (.511), on-base percentage (.448), runs scored (26), doubles (7) and stolen bases (14).
DeMuth earns Freshman of the Week honors after batting .600 for the week. The freshman reached base at a .625 clip and slugged .733 to combine for a OPS of 1.358. The infielder had three multi-hit games and scored and drove in at least one run in each of the Hoosiers' three contests. Overall, the LaPorte, Ind., native totaled nine hits, including two doubles, scored five runs and drove in four. DeMuth currently ranks among the Big Ten's top 10 in average (.368), on-base percentage (.435) and runs scored (18).
