Bloomington, Ind.--The Indiana Hoosiers came back from 6-1 deficit to defeat Western Michigan in the tenth inning today on a home run by 3B Frank O'Connell. The Hoosiers took two of the three games from the Broncos this weekend at Sembower Field.
Western Michigan jumped out to an early lead leaving the Hoosiers to play catch-up all day. In the fourth inning, WMU held a 6-1 lead. By the sixth inning, the Hoosiers cut it to 8-5.
The Hoosiers tied things up 10-10 in the eighth. LF Tim McNab led off with a single, followed by two walks by Western Michigan pitcher Ryan Takach. With the bases loaded, Dan Haegele was hit by a pitch to score McNab. Now with the game at 8-6 and the bases loaded again, WMU pitcher Dan Skyrd walked Doug DeVore to score Ryan Schade. That brought up C Brandt Childs who ripped a double to right field which scored Benji Clause. 3B Frank O'Connell singled with one out to score two more runners to make the score tied at 10-10.
Both teams picked up two runs a piece in the ninth to go into extra innings. Western Michigan came up short in the bottom of the tenth to give the Hoosiers the advantage. With a full count, O'Connell clobbered a home run to left field to grab the come-from-behind victory. With the win, IU's record climbed to 19-3.
Brad Edwards got the call on the hill for the Hoosiers. Edwards pitched four innings giving up seven hits while striking out eight batters. In the fifth, he handed things over to Dave Ferris, followed by four other Hoosier pitchers. In the ninth, Nick Otte (6-0) came in and grabbed the win as he allowed no runs and one hit.
IU gets back in action this Wednesday, March 31, at Sembower Field. The Hoosiers take on the IUPUI Jaguars at 3 p.m.
