Two Hoosiers Earn March Scholar-Athlete of the Month, IU Baseball Honored as CHAMPS Champ of the Month
March 31, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Two Indiana student-athletes were named the male and female Scholar-Athlete of the Month, while an entire Hoosier team earned CHAMPS Champ of the Month for March.
Senior diver Heidi Mahnken was named the Female Scholar-Athlete of Month for March for her success in the classroom. The Springfield, Mo., native helped the Hoosiers win their third-straight Big Ten swimming and diving championship, where she placed sixth in the Platform Diving with a score of 285.10, after posting a career-best 349.15 during prelims.
"Heidi is an excellent student with high aspirations for her future," said IU Director of Academic Services Marni Mooney. "Her positive attitude and willingness to go the extra mile is evident in her academic success. She continually impresses her professors and academic advisors with excellent grades and maintaining this high level of achievement with challenging coursework. Her success is due to an impressive level of determination and an ability to keep working toward her goal of attending medical school. With her goal in mind, Heidi will continue to impress everyone she comes into contact with."
"What a great honor for a great student-athlete," said IU head diving coach Dr. Jeff Huber. "Heidi is just an amazing person who has continually excelled both in the classroom and on the platform. I am so proud of all she has accomplished in her four years here at Indiana University and wish her all the best with her future endeavors. She has brought great honor and distinction to herself, her parents, and the Indiana University."
Junior forward Tom Pritchard was selected as IU's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Month for March. The Westlake, Ohio native averaged 2.5 points and 3.8 rebounds per game for the Hoosiers, while also recording 23 blocks and 22 assists in 32 games.
"Tom is a very hard worker and has grown to take a lot of pride in being a student-athlete at Indiana University," said Mooney. "He works hard and wants to succeed both in the classroom and on the basketball court. His strong effort in the classroom indicates both an appreciation for his chosen major as well as tremendous growth as a student. I consider him to be someone I can depend on to work as hard as he needs to in order to be successful and this will serve him well in life. Tom's professors appreciate his hard work and often comment that they enjoy having him in class."
"We are proud of the effort and hard work that Tom has put into his studies," said IU head men's basketball coach Tom Crean. "He understands the expectation we have that all of the young men in our program will make their classwork their highest priority."
IU's baseball team was selected as the CHAMPS Champ of the Month for March for its work with the Friends of Jaclyn Organization.
"The Baseball Team is deserving of the CHAMPS Champ of the month award, based upon their time spent with their adopted teammate Spencer, a young boy they met through the Friends of Jaclyn Organization," said IU Academic Advisor Amanda Fark. "The Organization is designed to connect athletic teams with children suffering from pediatric brain tumors. Over the last year, the team has called Spencer, texted him, and basically hung out with him. He came down to a few games last spring and threw out the first pitch for one of their games. Spencer and his family also came down this fall for a team barbeque/tailgate before a football game. Their time and efforts with Spencer are appreciated as he continues to struggle with his condition."
"Sometimes young people, especially young people in college athletics, tend to think the world revolves around them, and they forget others may being dealing with circumstances beyond comprehension, as is the case with a little boy named Spencer and his family," said IU head baseball coach Tracy Smith. "Our guys have embraced this very difficult situation with compassion and caring, and for that I am very proud of them."
The CHAMPS (Challenging Athletes Minds for Personal Success) Champ of the Month is an outstanding student that has excelled in all of the five areas of CHAMPS: service, personal and career development, and academic and athletic excellence.
