Childs drills two homers in win
Bloomington, Ind.--The Indiana baseball team routed IUPUI (3-18-1), 22-2, in a rain-soaked contest this afternoon at Sembower Field.
Senior catcher Brandt Childs hit two home runs and Tim McNab capped a 3-5 day with his first collegiate home run as Indiana moved to 20-3 on the season.
The Hoosiers wasted no time in getting on the board as Childs blasted a two-run home run in the first. Indiana tacked on two more in the second and in the third with Dan Haegele on second, the senior drilled his second home run, a two-run shot to left, giving Indiana a 6-0 lead.
With a 12-0 lead in the seventh, the Hoosiers struck for ten more runs. McNab led off with a double down the left field line and scored on Eric Blakely's single to right. With the bases loaded and two out, Chris Stroble doubled down the left field line to clear the bases. After a Gibran Hamdan walk, McNab homered to left for his first collegiate home run, a three-run shot, to put Indiana up 20-0.
In his first start of the season, junior RHP Tom Willerer tossed shutout innings to pick up his first collegiate win. Willerer struck out four before giving way to six other Hoosiers who combined on the victory.
Indiana opens the Big Ten season with a four-game series against Penn State in State College. The action gets underway at 3:00 p.m. Friday.
