Big Ten Names Sam Travis Player of the Week
April 1, 2013
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Sophomore first baseman Sam Travis added another Big Ten Player of the Week accolade to his resume on Monday (Apr. 1). It marks his second conference player of the week honor this season and the fourth of his career. Overall, Travis has been recognized by the B1G office seven times with weekly awards, earning Big Ten Freshman of the Week thrice a season ago.
Hoosiers have captured four of the weekly awards thus far this season, with Kyle Schwarber snaring player of the week laurels on March 11 and Evan Bell being named the Big Ten's Freshman of the Week after the opening weekend.
Travis clubbed his way to multiple hits in all three games of Indiana's road sweep at Iowa. He batted .462 and drove in eight runs over the weekend, slugging at a .923 clip and posting a .533 on-base percentage against the Hawkeyes. Travis recorded a 'weekend cycle,' stroking a homerun, triple, double and three singles in Iowa City. His biggest game came in the series opener, a five-RBI performance. The Hoosier first baseman came through in the clutch for Game Two, stroking a go-ahead RBI-triple over the right fielder's head to break up a 6-6 tie in IU's eventual 9-6 win. Travis came around to score four runs himself during the week, including a plated tally in the Hoosiers' 6-2 midweek victory over #10 Louisville.
