April 1, 1998 HOOSIERS LOSE TO MIAMI 29-6
Oxford, Ohio It was one of those games where nothing went right for the Indiana baseball team and everything did for Miami as the Redhawks defeated the Hoosiers 29-6 Wednesday.
Miami scored two in the first and nine more in the second off three Indiana pitchers for a 11-0 lead. After being sent down in order in the first two innings by MU starter Nate Tekavec, the Hoosiers got to him for five runs in the third.on five hits. Miami scored once more in the third and IU answered that with a run in the top of the fourth.
It appeared IU releiver Greg Schabel would get out of the fourth without a run being scored until he made athrowing error to first base which helped open the floodgates for the RedHawks.
Miami went on to score 13 unearned runs in the inning which also included 7 hits and 3 costly Indiana errors. By the time the inning was over, Miami had sent 19 batters to the plate and had opened a 25-6 lead.
Indiana managed just one more hit over the next four innings off three Miami relievers while the RedHawks scored four more runs in the bottom of the seventh for a final of 29-6. Miami scored 15 unearned runs as the Hoosiers sommitted a season-high 7 errors.
Tekavec pitched the first four innings for Miami and got the win improving his record to 5-1. IU starter Mark Elder last only one inning and allowed 4 runs on 4 hits while taking the loss.
Indiana had only 7 hits in the game with Benji Clause leading the way going 2-4 with 2 RBI.
The Hoosiers get back into conference play this weekend as they take on Purdue. Friday's game will be played at Victory Field in Indianapolis and will start at 7 p.m. Saturday's doubleheader is at Indiana while the series finale is at Purdue on Sunda
