    HOOSIERS SWEEP PURDUE
Indiana gets two complete game victories to take 2-1 series lead

Bloomington, Ind.The Indiana baseball team defeated Purdue, 8-3 and 12-2 to take a 2-1 lead in the Big Ten series at Sembower Field. Junior Chad Smith pitched his fifth consecutive complete game in the first game, while junior Jason Torres pitched his first career complete game in the second game.

In the opener, IU jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings and never looked back. In a four-run second inning, junior Brandt Childs and sophomore Doug DeVore each got hits to extend their hitting streaks to 12 games apiece. DeVore's two-run double was the highlight of the inning.

Smith coasted the rest of the way, scattering eight hits while allowing just three runs and striking out six.

Three Hoosiers finished with three hits, as Childs, DeVore and senior Mike Spisak each got three hits.

In the second game, IU trounced the Boilermakers, 12-2 behind Torres' strongest performance as a Hoosier. The junior pitched the full seven innings, allowing just two runs on nine hits and striking out five.

Indiana did most of its damage in the fourth inning, when it scored nine runs including senior Roger Rodeheaver's fifth homer of the season, a three-run shot to right field. He would finish the game two for three with four RBI, and in the first three games of the series, is five for 10 with six runs batted in.

While the Hoosiers used just two pitchers, Purdue was forced to use eight over the two games, including Brad Brown, who made his first appearance of the season.

Childs finished two for three to extend his hitting streak to a career-best 13 games, but DeVore took the collar, snapping his career-high streak at 12.

The wins improve the Hoosiers to 19-14 and 4-3 in the Big Ten, while the Boilers fall to 14-14 and 3-4 in conference action. The two teams will play the final game of the series tomorrow at West Lafayette. First pitch at Lambert Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
