Dickerson Earns First Weekly Honor
April 6, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Freshman designated hitter Alex Dickerson has been named co-Big Ten Player of the Week, the conference announced today. Dickerson had two hits in each of Indiana's games at No. 26 Illinois over the weekend, knocking a pair of home runs in the Saturday doubleheader. It is the first weekly honor for the Poway, Calif., native, as he shares the honor with Minnesota's A.J. Pettersen.
For the week, Dickerson went 9-for-16, including a 3-for-4 game against Cincinnati on Wednesday. Dickerson followed that with two hits and two RBI in a 14-4 win over the Illini in the series opener. But he saved his best performance for Saturday's doubleheader.
In the first game, Dickerson brought his heroics in extra innings, lifting IU to a 2-1 win in 10 with a solo homer to left field, his eighth of the season. In the second game of the double-dip, Dickerson went deep again, this time blasting a two-run shot to center that gave IU a 3-1 lead.
Dickerson is currently in the top 10 in the Big Ten in several offensive categories. His nine home runs and 83 total bases both sit atop the conference, while he is also in the top 10 in batting average (.400, fourth), slugging (.722, second), on-base percentage (.457, 10th), hits (46, second) and RBI (34, fourth). He leads all conference freshmen in those categories.
Just halfway through his debut campaign, Dickerson is already threatening the school mark for homers and RBI for a freshman. Mike Sabo (1985) holds the freshman record with 11 home runs, while Phil Dauphin (1988) holds the RBI mark with 58 in his debut campaign.
Indiana now faces a pair of midweek contests, at Louisville on Tuesday and against Valparaiso on Wednesday at Sembower Field. Both games are slated for a 4 p.m. EDT first pitch. Live audio and statistics for both games will be available on IUHoosiers.com.
