Terre Haute, Ind. -- The 27th-ranked Indiana State Sycamores handed the Indiana Hoosiers a 13-8 loss at Sycamore Field Tuesday night. Indiana State got out to an early 7-0 lead after the first two innings. Chris Wilson lasted only one inning giving up four runs on four hits, including a homer to ISU center fielder Rick Angell on the first pitch. The Sycamores added two more in the fourth and four in the sixth to make it 13-0.
Indiana made a run in the final three innings, but it wasn't enough to get the victory. The Hoosiers scored one in the seventh, five in the eighth, and two in the ninth. Brandt Childs provided the only Hoosier highlight by hitting a grand slam in the eighth inning, his ninth home run of the season. Doug DeVore continued to hit the ball well going 2-5 with one RBI.
The Hoosiers used five pitchers. Wilson's record is now 3-2 after getting the loss. David Ferris tossed 2.1 innings and gave up five runs and Fred Graf threw 2.2 and gave up four runs. Zack Otte pitched a scoreless eighth and Nick Otte did the same in the ninth striking out two batters.
Indiana's record stands at 19-16 and 4-4 in the Big Ten. This weekend, the Hoosiers have a big conference series at Michigan State. The first game starts at 3 p.m. CST on Friday. Saturday's doubleheader is at noon as is Sunday's game.
