Hoosiers face Indiana State and Michigan State
THIS WEEK: The Hoosiers will play the second of seven games on the road against Indiana State on Tuesday. This weekend, Indiana travels to Lansing, Michigan for a four-game series with Michigan State. Tuesday's game starts at 6:30 p.m. The weekend series will start at 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's game will start at 1 p.m.
THE OPPONENTS: Indiana State: The Sycamores are 18-6-1 on the season and at one point, won 12 in a row. In the latest Collegiate Baseball poll, the Indiana State is ranked 27th in the nation. ISU played in the 7-UP Diamond Classic and finished in fifth place, Indiana was the runner-up. Common opponents so far this season include Ball State, Butler, and Purdue. The Sycamores lost to Ball State (15-12) and Purdue (4-3) and defeated Butler (9-1). Indiana beat Butler (10-3), Ball State (3-2), and split a four-game series with Purdue. Overall, the Sycamores lead the series 16-6, including last season's 9-1 victory. Michigan State: The Spartans are tied with Michigan and Northwestern for eighth in the Big Ten. They have an overall record of 11-14 and are 2-6 in the Big Ten. In the series last year, Indiana won three out of the four games in Bloomington. Overall, Michigan State leads the series, 74-58.
PURDUE RECAP: Game 1: Played in Indianapolis at Victory Field...game started at 8:30, one and a half hours late...Hoosiers jumped out to 4-1 lead after two innings...Purdue then scored eight in the last five innings...Kyle Boyd only walked two, but didn't strikeout any...DH Dan Haegele went 3-5 with a double and stole his 14th base...1B Roger Rodeheaver was 3-4 with a double. Game 2: Doubleheader played in Bloomington...Indiana scored four in the second and three in the third...OF Doug DeVore and Mike Spisak went 3-3...Spisak had two doubles as did C Brandt Childs...Childs was 3-4...P Chad Smith tossed fifth complete game in a row...struck out six and walked three. Game 3: P Jason Torres picked up his first win of the season with a complete game...the Hoosiers had a nine-run fourth inning...sent 12 batters to the plate...Rodeheaver hit a three-run home run in the inning...Haegele had a three-run double. Game 4: Final game played in West Lafayette...the game only took 2:02 to play...the Hoosiers managed only five hits...Childs 13-game hitting streak was snapped...P Greg Schabel had his best outing of the season going 7.1 innings...allowed four hits and three earned runs.
LOOKING AHEAD: In the month of April, Indiana will have four important Big Ten series against Purdue, Michigan State, Northwestern, and Minnesota. Non-conference games include Miami (OH), Indiana State, Ball State, Louisville, and Valparaiso.
HOOSIER NOTES: C/DH Scott Anleitner has five consecutive pinch hits...P Kyle Boyd needs 15 more strikeouts to reach the top 10 all-time list...Boyd has walked 12 batters in 51.2 IP...he gave up a career-high 14 hits vs. Purdue...C Brandt Childs had his 13 game hit streak snapped in the final game against Purdue...that is the longest streak for IU this season...2B/SS Benji Clause has a career-high five game hit streak...he leads the team in walks (30) and strikeouts (31)...OF Doug DeVore's three hits against in the second game for a season high...had his career-high 12 game hit streak broken in the third game against Purdue...1B Roger Rodeheaver batted .385 with 4 runs and 5 RBI in the Purdue series...had career high 4 RBI in the second game of the series...he has 13 doubles on the season and 31 in his career...needs nine more to be in 10th all-time...P Greg Schabel pitched a career-high 7.1 innings vs. Purdue...P Chad Smith has pitched five straight complete games...DH/3B Dan Haegele is hitting .452 in conference play to lead the team...P Jason Torres threw his first complete game against Purdue.
CLUTCH HITTERS: As long as there are runners on base, the Hoosiers will put the ball in playwith the bases empty, Indiana is batting .245...when runners are on base, .340...same when the bases are loaded, .340...with runners in scoring position, IU is batting .351...as a team, Indiana has 84 2-out RBI compared to 69 for the opponents.
30/30 CLUB?: 2B/SS Benji Clause is the newest member of the 30/30 club. So far this season Clause has accumulated 30 walks and 31 strikeouts. The single-season record in walks is 62 by Joe Strutz in 1993. Last season, Ryan Dillon struck out 52 times to set the single-season record at Indiana. As a team, the Hoosiers have been hit by a pitch 30 times. The opponents have been plunked only 18 times.
