    INDIANA BASEBALL GAME NOTES

    Hoosiers at Michigan State
    April 12-14
    Kobs Field
    East Lansing, Mich.

    STILL ON TOP
After two four-game sets, the Hoosiers are sitting in a tie for the Big Ten conference lead with the Ohio State Buckeyes. Both teams are 6-2 in the conference. The teams meet up on April 19-21 at Sembower Field.

    BEST START SINCE 1999
The Hoosiers' record of 24-6 is the best start since 1999. That year, after two Big Ten sets, the Hoosiers were 26-6 with a 5-3 mark in conference play.

    HOOSIER BASEBALL
The 2002 campaign marks the 107th season Indiana has sponsored baseball as a varsity sport. During that time, the Hoosiers have squared off against 270 different opponents.

    BIG TEN CONFERENCE
Indiana University is a member of the Big Ten Conference. The Hoosiers and the University of Michigan do not meet on this year's regular season schedule. The Big Ten tournament is scheduled for May 22-25.

SENIORS LEAD HOOSIERS TO MIDWEEK VICTORY
After a 3-1 series victory over Iowa in conference play, the Hoosiers took on the Miami of Ohio Redhawks in a midweek non-conference battle.
The Hoosiers were victorious for the 24th time this season after they came back to defeat Miami 10-7.
IU was led by senior shortstop Eric Blakeley who went 4-6 with his sixth home run of the season and three RBI. Senior Gibran Hamdan had a perfect day with a 4-4 performance and three RBI. Classmate Mark Minor also had a RBI single for the Hoosiers to make it a "Senior Day" at Sembower Field.
Junior righthanded reliever Ryan Smith posted his second win of the season with two scoreless innings.
The Hoosier bats were alive as they pounded out 15 hits and scored five or more runs for the 24th time. IU improved its record to 2-0 over the Mid-American Conference this season.
"A midweek win like this builds confidence,"said Blakeley. "It's good to come out and get a win like this because it gives us some momentum heading into a big series this weekend at Michigan State."

A LOOK AT THE SPARTANS & THE SERIES
The Michigan State Spartans come into this weekend with a 20-6 overall record and a 4-3 mark in the conference. MSU is tied with IU for the ninth-fewest losses in the nation overall.
The teams have gotten together 130 times with IU winning 57 and losing 73. The teams last met up three years and one day ago, April 18, 1999, with MSU pulling out an 8-4 victory.

    SPARTAN LEADERS
The Spartans are led by Bob Malek who comes into the weekend batting .431 with a Big Ten-leading 13 doubles. Chris McCuiston is now the Big Ten leader in home runs with 12 and he carries a .367 avg. into the weekend.
Nick Bates leads the pitching staff with a 7-0 record and a 2.76 ERA and three complete games. Bryan Gale is another workhorse on the mound with 47.1 innings and a 4.94 ERA

SIX LOSSES...NINTH FEWEST IN THE NATION
The Hoosiers' 24-6 record may not be breaking records, but the number of losses ranks nationally.
The Hoosiers have only lost six times and the total is the ninth-lowest in the nation this season.
The Hoosiers are Wake Forest, Ohio State, Michigan State and former-No. 1 Stanford for this ranking.

    SPANOS' STREAK SNAPPED
Junior third baseman Vasili Spanos had his 10-game hit streak snapped on Tuesday. In that streak he had 16 hits in 34 at-bats with 12 RBI and 13 runs scored. He also had three homers and four doubles during the 10-game stretch.

    SPANOS JOINS 100-HIT CLUB
Junior third baseman Vasili Spanos notched his 100-hit of his career in Florida against Northern Illinois. The third baseman was 2-for-3 with two RBI in the victory. Spanos, a native of River Forest, Illinois, has registered 130 hits in his career. For the season, Spanos is batting .458 with a team-high 11 home runs and 44 RBI.

    BLAKELEY ENTERS 100-RUN CLUB
Senior Eric Blakeley entered an elite club at Indiana in the series against Illinois. The Hoosier shortstop scored a run for the 100th time in IU's 4-0 win over Illinois. Blakeley now has 108 runs overall.

SPANOS IS TWO-TIME PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Junior Vasili Spanos is the season's first back-to-back winner of the Big Ten Player of the Week honor. He shares this week with Mike Sokol of Michigan. Spanos won the honor last week after leading the Hoosiers to a 4-0 record as well as last week's 4-1 mark.

    CONFERENCE LEADERS GALORE
While the team is leading the Big Ten in ERA (3.59), there are Hoosiers in the top three in individual categories.
Spanos leads the conference in RBI (44), total bases (91), slugging pct. (.948) and on-base pct. (.552). He is also second in home runs with 11.
Junior Kennard Jones is leading in hits (52), tied in stolen bases (18), runs scored (53), total plate appearances (141) and at-bats (124).
In addition to leading in ERA, the team is second in team batting with a .349 avg.

    MORGAN NEARING 1,000
With 978 career wins going into the weekend, Indiana head coach Bob Morgan is only 22 victories away from reaching the 1,000-win mark for his career. Morgan, who is the winningest coach in the history of Hoosier baseball, ranks second among all Big Ten head coaches in career victories, behind only Illinois' Richard "Itch" Jones.
Jones enters the 2002 campaign with 1,126 career wins. Morgan ranks in the top 20 among all active coaches in both wins and in winning percentage. In fact, in the 26 years Morgan has been a head coach, he has only had one season in which his team did not enjoy a winning season.

    BLAKELEY CAUGHT STEALING
Although Bob Morgan may be in search of win number 1,000, but there is another Hoosier who is closing in on a career milestone. Shortstop Eric Blakeley has as he moved into a tie for 18th place on Indiana's career stolen base chart with 33 career steals.

SPANOS ENTERS TOP 20...MORE THAN ONCE
With career numbers skyrocketing this season, junior Vasili Spanos is benefiting from this strong season.
The third baseman has moved into 12th in career home runs with 27, 16th in extra base hits with 59 and is now in sole possession of 20th with 117 career RBI.
The most interesting thing about it is that Spanos still has another season after this year. His numbers will continue to climb.

    COACHES EXPECTING
IU assistant coaches Tony Kestranek and Jeff Calcaterra are both expecting new children this season.
Kestranek's wife is due at any time and if you see him run from the ballpark during a game, you'll know why.
