BASEBALL WEEKLY RELEASE
Hoosier travel to Ball State and host Northwestern
THIS WEEK: Indiana will hit the road for a game at Ball State on Wednesday at 3 p.m. This weekend the Hoosiers will return to Sembower Field for a four-game series with the Northwestern Wildcats. The series will start at 3 p.m. Friday. Saturday and Sunday's games are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
THE OPPONENTS: Ball State: This will be the second time the Cardinals (23-10) and Hoosiers (21-18) have met this season. The first meeting was at the 7-Up Diamond Classic in Evansville. Kyle Boyd only gave up two runs on four hits in a 3-2 win. Brandt Childs provided the offensive spark with a three-run homer in the sixth inning. With the win, Indiana leads the overall series, 5-4. Other common opponents with Ball State include Butler, Indiana State, IUPUI, Miami (OH), Notre Dame, and Purdue. The Hoosiers are 4-5 against these teams while Ball State has posted a 8-2 record. They are playing IUPUI on Tuesday before Indiana comes to Muncie on Wednesday. Northwestern: After starting the season 10-4, the Wildcats are 16-14 overall and 4-8 in the Big Ten. This is an important series for both teams if either of them are going to be a threat in the conference. Northwestern has split with Ohio State and Penn State, and they were swept by first-place Illinois. Besides Penn State, who the Hoosiers split with, the only other team the two have played is Northern Iowa. Northwestern opened the season with UNI by winning 7-5. Indiana played UNI in Homestead, Florida and lost 13-12. The two schools have not played each other since the 1995 season when they split the four-game series. Overall, Indiana's record against Northwestern is 61-51-2. Outfielder Mike Stritch was named Big Ten Co-Player of the Week. For the week, he hit for a perfect slugging percentage (18 bases in 18 AB) and had a .750 on-base percentage. In the Penn State series, he had 13 hits (.722 BA) and 10 RBI.
