THIS WEEK: Winners of five in a row, the Hoosiers host Michigan State this weekend in a four-game series at Sembower Field. The series gets underway Friday at 3:00 p.m. with a single game. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and will wrap up the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
THE OPPONENT: Michigan State (15-14, 4-7) comes in after taking two of three from Penn State in East Lansing. In Saturday's 4-3 win, DH Joe Albaugh's ninth-inning double drove in 1B Kyle Geswin to give the Spartans the win. Geswin went 3-4 with two home runs, three runs scored and three RBI. Penn State won the second game 16-6 and MSU came back on Sunday to get a 16-9 win. Albaugh did the damage with two home runs and six RBI while RF Tom Hartley went 3-5 with a home run, three runs and two RBI. Hartley's hitting is sixth in Big Ten play with a .417 average. Junior LF Mike Pisani's .413 average in seventh in the Big Ten. For the season, Pisani is hitting .384 with 21 runs scored, eight doubles and 17 RBI. The Spartan staff is led by RHP Dan Horvath (3-2, 3.00 ERA, 27.0 IP, .281 Opp Avg) and RHP Scott Brandell (3-2, 5.11 ERA, 1 CG, 28 SO). The Spartans take on Oakland on Tuesday and Sienna Heights on Wednesday. Last season, the Hoosiers and Spartans split the series in East Lansing.
ON THE HILL: Senior RHP Jason Torres, who leads the Big Ten in ERA, will get the call on Friday, senior RHP Chad Smith and freshman LHP Brad Edwards will go on Saturday and sophomore LHP David Ferris will take the hill on Sunday.
LAST WEEK: The Hoosiers swept Purdue for the first time since 1996. IU took the first game 18-4 behind the 12 strike outs of senior RHP Jason Torres. Junior RF Doug DeVore went 2-5 and ripped his Big Ten leading 13th home run. Brandt Childs, Tim McNab, Dan Haegele and Frank O'Connell added long balls for Indiana. On Saturday, the Hoosiers rallied from a 3-0 deficit to take game one, 4-3. With the bases loaded and one out in the seventh, Purdue starter Austin Bilke drilled freshman 1B Mark Minor in the head to bring home Haegele with the winning run. Junior RHP Fred Graf tossed 4 1/3 innings of relief to pick up his first win of the year. In game two, Indiana jumped in front early thanks to a two-run homer by Childs. Indiana extended its lead to 7-1 until Purdue cut it to 7-5 in the fifth. The Hoosiers tacked on four in the fifth to eventually 13-8. On Sunday, McNab went 2-3 with three runs scored and a home run as IU completed the sweep with a 10-3 win. Sophomore LHP David Ferris struck out seven in six innings of work to up his record to 3-1. Purdue jumped out in front 2-0 but Indiana tied it with two its own in the second. The Hoosiers went ahead for good with five in the fourth. With two runs already in and Benji Clause on third and Haegele on second, DeVore ripped a triple down the right field line to put IU up 6-2. DeVore then came home on Frank O'Connell's triple as IU never looked back.
LOOKING AHEAD: Indiana hosts Big Ten leader Minnesota next weekend. The Gophers (24-7, 7-1 tied with Ohio State for 1st) host Michigan this weekend in Minneapolis. Last season, the Gophers took three of four from the Hoosiers in Minneapolis.
