Bloomington, Ind. -- Second baseman Carlos Fernandez singled home Mike Wagner with two out in the top of the seventh to break a 4-4 tie as Michigan State swept Indiana in a doubleheader this afternoon at Sembower Field.

The 3-0, 5-4 sweep improves MSU's record to 19-14 overall and 6-7 in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers fall to 26-8 overall and 5-5 in the Big Ten.

With it tied at four in the seventh, Wagner reached on a fielder's choice and then stole second. With a two outs and a 3-2 count, Fernandez singled to center off Indiana starter Chad Smith (4-5) to score Wagner, giving the Spartans a 5-4 lead.

Fernandez led the Spartan attack with three hits while Wagner went 1-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. He also hit a two-run home run in the fifth.

Joe Axelson (1-3) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of Dan Horvath to get the win.

Indiana took the early lead on senior catcher Brandt Childs' first inning single, scoring Dan Haegele. IU scored again in the third on DeVore's 14th home run of the year to take a 2-0 lead. DeVore's blast puts him tied with Mike Sabo for sixth in the IU record book for single season home runs.

After the Spartans put up four of their own, two on Wagner's fifth inning blast, Indiana tied the game with two of its own in the sixth.

With one out, freshman first baseman Mark Minor tripled to right center and scored on a Blake St. Clair sacrifice fly. With Jason Williams on first, Ryan Schade doubled to score Williams, tying the game at four.

In the first game, right fielder Tom Hartley broke a scoreless tie with a three-run, bases loaded double off Jason Torres (3-1) in the sixth.

Scott Brandell (4-2) tossed a one hitter and struck out seven for the Spartans. Only three Indiana players reached base against Brandell and none of them advanced past second base.

The teams finish up the series tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Sembower Field.
