Denato Named Big Ten's Co-Freshman of the Week
April 18, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - On Monday (Apr. 18), Joey DeNato became the third Hoosier freshman to earn Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors this season. Ty Downing took home the award back on Feb. 28 and Dustin DeMuth won it back-to-back weeks (Mar. 28, Apr. 4).
DeNato picks up Freshman of the Week accolades after striking out 11 in an eight-inning shutout performance against Iowa on Sunday, leading the Hoosiers to the series victory. The left-hander scattered four hits and four walks without surrendering a run over eight innings and tied the program record for most strikeouts in a Big Ten game. In conference play this season, the freshman holds a 1.15 ERA and has held opponents to a .145 batting average.
He shares the award with Ohio State's Josh Dezse, who hit .727 this week and was also named the Big Ten's Player of the Week.
