April 23, 1999 HOOSIERS LOSE TO MINNESOTA 9-7
Bloomington, Ind.--The Minnesota Golden Gophers scored six runs in the eighth inning to grab the 9-7 come-from-behind victory today at Sembower Field. With the victory, Minnesota moves to 29-9 overall and 10-3 in the Big Ten. Indiana drops to 28-10 and 6-7 in the Big Ten.
Indiana started strong scoring two unearned runs in the first inning. With runners on the corners, 3B Frank O'Connell reached on an error by 2B Matt Scanlon to score the first run. The very next batter LF Tim McNab also reached on an error to score RF Doug DeVore.
The Hoosier opened the sixth inning in a 3-3 tie. With two men on, DH Dan Haegele singled to center field scoring 1B Mark Minor. On the next play, Haegele advanced to third and scored on an error by pitcher Kelly Werner and 2B Benji Clause stole home to take the 6-3 lead.
The lead was not big enough for the Hoosiers as Minnesota came out strong in the eighth to tallied six runs on five hits to make the score 9-6. IU could only muster one run in the eighth to record a 9-7 loss.
Hoosier starter RHP Jason Torres only gave up five hits today but walked eight in a seven inning effort. Chris Wilson came on in the eighth to record the loss as he gave up three runs while striking out two.
Both teams will be back in action tomorrow at Sembower Field in a double
header beginning at 1 p.m.
