BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The 13th ranked Indiana University baseball team (26-11, 11-1 Big Ten) returns to the road this weekend, travelling to Champaign, Ill., to take on the Illinois Fighting Illini (22-15, 9-3 Big Ten). The Hoosiers hold the top spot in the Big Ten standings by two games over second place Illinois.

The Hoosiers topped the Ball State Cardinals on Wednesday, 10-1. The teams traded runs in the first two innings but, with the game tied 1-1 going to the bottom of the sixth inning, the IU bats came alive. Indiana proceeded to post nine runs in the inning, the most in an inning by an IU team since April 4, 2010. Brad Hartong went 2-of-5 at the plate with a home run and five RBI.

In the first game against the Spartans last weekend, senior LHP Joey DeNato tossed 8.0 shutout innings, allowing just five hits to go with five strikeouts to get his 32nd career win and improve to 8-1 on the season. He also increased his career innings pitched total to 324.0, a new IU record. For his efforts, he was named co-Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, the second time he has received the award this season and the third of his career. In addition to that record, DeNato is also the IU career leader in wins (32) and strikeouts (262).

Illinois split a pair of midweek games this week, most recently a 5-2 loss at Busch Stadium in St. Louis to Missouri. The Illini posted a series sweep last weekend against Penn State to jump up into second place in the Big Ten standings.

    • Junior Sam Travis ranks 15th among all NCAA active hitters with 144 career RBI.

    • The Hoosiers' team ERA of 2.48 ranks 16th in the country this season

After posting back-to-back series sweeps at Ohio State and at Iowa, the Hoosiers have won their last eight consecutive road games in Big Ten play dating back to the end of the 2013 regular season (2 wins at Ohio State).

Brad Hartong had a 6-game hit streak end on April 13, during which he provided another power bat in the already potent Indiana lineup. During the streak, he hit .348 with 2 home runs, 10 RBI and nine runs scored. In a midweek game against Ball State (April 23), Hartong went 2-for-5 with a 3-run home run and a 2-run single - all coming in the sixth inning - help lift the Hoosiers to a 10-1 victory over the Cardinals. In the last 12 games, Hartong has racked up 12 of his 22 hits this season as well as 15 of his 17 RBI on the year.

Indiana's staff earned run average of 2.48 is the best in the Big Ten, and one of just two teams with a team ERA of less than 3.00. In Big Ten play (12 games), that team ERA drops all the way down to 1.54, also tops in the conference by over a full run. IU has three of the top-10 individual ERAs in the conference (all games); represented by Scott Effross (1st, 1.41), Joey DeNato (6th, 2.12) and Christian Morris (8th, 2.49). The team ERA ranks 16th in the country entering this weekend series at Illinois.

Senior LHP Joey DeNato has etched his name firmly at the top of most pitching lists at Indiana. He is the career record holder for wins (32), strikeouts (262) and innings pitched (324.0). He is a Big Ten best 8-1 this season with an ERA of 2.12. In 10 starts this season, he has posted a quality start in eight (6.0 IP and 3 ER or less).

Hoosier relievers have locked down leads in the late innings this season, evidenced by Indiana's 20-0 record when leading after six innings and 21-0 mark when on top with seven frames in the books.

Over the last five games, the IU bullpen has pitched a total of 19 innings, giving up zero runs on 11 hits and 19 strikeouts.
