IU Blasts Way Past Grenadiers
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana baseball team pounded out 17 hits en route to a 16-2 win over IU-Southeast on Thursday afternoon at Sembower Field. With the win the Hoosiers improve to 21-19, while the Grenadiers fall to 24-28-1.
Seniors Corby Heckman and Joe Kemp each had a pair of runs scored and four RBI. Heckman was 3-for-4, while Kemp was 2-for-4. Juniors Jay Brant and Reggie Watson, along with sophomore Josh Richardson and freshman Tyler Cox each crossed home plate twice.
The Hoosiers posted a five-spot and batted around in the bottom of the first inning. Brant singled through the left side to score Watson from second, and Heckman then doubled to left center to plate Brant and Richardson. The Cream and Crimson scored its final two runs of the stanza on ground outs by junior Zach Boswell and sophomore Michael Nilles.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Matt Saba tossed the initial two innings and fanned a pair while scattering just one hit. The Greenwood, Ind., native notched his fourth win of the season.
After the Cream and Crimson drew three straight walks with two out in the bottom of the fourth, Kemp pushed the margin to 7-0 as he singled through the right side, scoring Watson and Richardson.
The Grenadiers' Brad Nickels replaced starting pitcher sophomore Greg Ballard in the bottom of the fourth and was welcomed by a Heckman single to left center that scored Brant and Kemp to make the score 9-0. IU tallied its 10th run of the game on a passed ball that allowed Boswell to trot home from third.
The Hoosiers scored two in the fifth on RBI singles from Cox and Richardson.
In his first home appearance since 2003, sophomore right-hander Chris Hynes pitched a scoreless third followed by two innings of shutout baseball from sophomore left-hander Brad Kramer.
IUSE scored its only run of the game on a solo homer by freshman Beau Manning in the top of the sixth.
In the bottom of the seventh, Cox scored on a wild pitch, followed by a Kemp two-RBI single that brought home freshmen Brad Udoff and Arden McWilliams.
Sophomore Bobby Segal, pinch hitting in the bottom of the eight, moved IU's final run across with a single to center field.
Kemp pitched the ninth and sent three Grenadiers down via the strikeout in his seventh appearance of the year.
The Hoosiers return to Big Ten action this weekend with a four-game set at Ohio State (April 29 - May 1). The first game of the series will be Friday at 6:35 p.m., followed by a twinbill on Saturday at 4:05 p.m., and the series finale on Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
