Arnett Named to Pitcher of the Year Watch List
April 30, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Junior right-handed pitcher Eric Arnett has been named to the College Baseball Foundation's National Pitcher of the Year Award Watch List, the organization announced today. The Watch List consists of the top 50 pitchers around the nation. The Pitcher of the Year will be honored during the College Baseball Awards Show on July 2 in Lubbock.
Arnett is one of four Big Ten pitchers on the list, as he is joined by fellow Big Ten Pitcher of the Year candidates Chris Fetter (Michigan), Alex Wimmers (Ohio State) and Jake Hale (Ohio State). With four pitchers on the list, the conference is tied with the Pac-10 behind the Big 12 (eight), ACC (seven), SEC (six), and Big West (five).
Arnett has burst onto the scene this year, going 9-1 with a 2.49 ERA and 76 strikeouts in 76 innings of work. Opponents are hitting just .213 off the Pataskala, Ohio, native, as he has allowed just 58 hits and 24 walks on the season. His nine wins are already tied for third in Indiana history, while his 76 Ks are just two shy of placing him in the school's top 10.
In conference play, Arnett has been even more impressive, winning all five of his starts and throwing three complete games. Despite giving up six earned runs to Michigan over the weekend, the junior still has a 2.41 ERA in conference action and has seen opponents hit just .193. He has not given up a home run since his first inning of conference action, against Minnesota on March 28. His five conference wins have already matched the school record.
Arnett will look to set a new school record for Big Ten wins this weekend as the Hoosiers travel to West Lafayette to take on arch-rival Purdue. The two teams will play at 4 p.m. on Friday with games at 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday at Lambert Field. Sunday's contest will be carried live on WHCC 105.1 FM. GameTracker and live audio for all three games will also be available on IUHoosiers.com.
