    HOOSIERS HOLD OFF WILDCATS 9-8

Evanston, Ill. -- The Hoosiers jumped out to a 9-1 lead after 3 1/2 innings Friday and then held on for a 9-8 victory over Northwestern.

Frank O'Connell and Mark Minor each went 2-for-5 with 3 RBIs to lead the Indiana attack.

O'Connell had a two-run home run in the first innings and a rbi triple in the third. Minor had a two-run single in the third and a run-scoring double in the fourth.

After the Hoosiers got their big lead, the Wildcats got four runs in the fourth off IU starter Jason Torres to make it 9-5. Torres then gave up consecutive home runs in the seventh to lead off the inning to make it 9-7.

Torres was replaced by Fred Graf who pitched two innings and gave up just one run. Chris Wilson then pitched the ninth to earn his third save of the season.

Northwestern releiver Dan Padgett allowed two runs in the fourth but then allowed just one hit and only four baserunners as he shut down the Hoosier attack.

The Hoosiers are now 30-12 overall and 8-9 in the conference and remain one game behind Michigan in the battle for the final playoff spot.
