Sabourin Named to Olerud Award Watch List
May 10, 2010
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Junior 1B/LHP Jerrud Sabourin has been named to the 2010 John Olerud Award Watch List, the College Baseball Foundation announced today. Sabourin is one of 25 players in the nation to be named to the list, which features the best two-way players around the country. He is the only Big Ten representative on the list.
Sabourin is currently second in the Big Ten with his .408 average and 80 hits, trailing only his teammate, Alex Dickerson, in both categories. The lefty has started 163 consecutive games for the Hoosiers and is currently fifth on IU's career hit list with 253 hits. He also has a career average of .375, which ranks him sixth in Hoosier lore. He was a Second Team All-Big Ten honoree as a sophomore.
This season, the southpaw has chipped in on the mound as well, making three starts and posting a 1-0 record and a 4.67 ERA. He has surrendered just four walks in his 17 1/3 innings of work to 11 strikeouts in eight appearances. He collected his first career win against Eastern Illinois on Indiana's Spring Trip, going five innings for the victory.
Sabourin's path to the Hoosiers was a bit unconventional, as the San Diego native originally committed to Arizona as a pitcher, but was cut on the first day of fall practice. Smith saw the lefty in a workout and offered him a roster spot as a walk-on at the winter break before the 2008 season.
Sabourin and the Hoosiers will play host to Kentucky on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Sembower Field. Admission is free to all IU baseball home games. Live audio and statistics will be available at IUHoosiers.com.
